In its weather forecast for today, 31 July 2026, in Spain, AEMET reports a day of showers and locally heavy thunderstorms in the southern Iberian system, the Pyrenees and surrounding areas. High temperatures, exceeding 35 degrees in large parts of the peninsular interior, the interior of Mallorca and the Canary Islands, and 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir valley, southern Castilla-La Mancha and the middle Ebro region. A marked drop in maximum temperatures is expected in the eastern Cantabrian coast and the upper Ebro region.
The heatwave continues, with generally stable conditions prevailing across the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with partly cloudy or clear skies. However, low cloud associated with mist is expected in the Strait of Gibraltar, along the Alboran Sea coast, and in Ceuta and Melilla, whilst cloudy or very cloudy skies are expected in Galicia and the Cantabrian coast. In the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are likely in the south of the Iberian System, the Pyrenees and surrounding areas; these are expected to be locally heavy. Rainfall is also likely along the Cantabrian coast and in northern Galicia. In the Canary Islands, low cloud is expected on the northern side and clear skies on the southern side.
Dust haze is expected in the south of the Iberian Peninsula and in the far east of the Canary Islands.
Maximum temperatures are set to fall in the northern third of the country, particularly in the eastern Cantabrian region and the upper Ebro valley, whilst they are set to rise in the Rías Baixas, the Balearic Islands and the southern coastlines, with no change elsewhere. Temperatures may exceed 35 degrees in large parts of the peninsular interior, the interior of Mallorca and the Canary Islands, and 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir valley, southern Castilla-La Mancha and, in places, the middle Ebro region. Minimum temperatures will rise in the southern third of the peninsula and fall in the Ebro valley and on the Meseta. Tropical nights are expected, with temperatures not falling below 20 degrees, in the Canary Islands, large parts of the southern half of the peninsula, the Ebro Valley and the Mediterranean coast.
Light south-westerly winds will prevail on the peninsula, becoming stronger in the afternoon. In the far north, the wind will be light from the north-west, moderate along the Galician coast and veering north-east. On the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic Islands, it will be easterly, generally light. In the Strait, a moderate easterly wind will blow, with strong gusts at times. In the Canary Islands, there will be a moderate trade wind with the possibility of very strong gusts in exposed areas.
