Este hecho nos ha permitido datar de manera muy fiable el material e inferir que los animales africanos, que se trasladaron a Europa mientras el Mediterr\u00e1neo permaneci\u00f3 seco, vivieron en esta zona al menos hasta hace 4,9 millones de a\u00f1os\u201d, explica el investigador del MNCN Jan van der Made.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Entre los hallazgos destacan varias gacelas, el registro m\u00e1s antiguo de un sivaterio (antecesor de la actual jirafa) o el m\u00e1s moderno de un cocodrilo<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Entre los hallazgos destacan varias gacelas, el registro m\u00e1s antiguo de un sivaterio (antecesor de la actual jirafa) o el m\u00e1s moderno de un cocodrilo. \u201cLa presencia de cocodrilos demuestra que la temperatura de la regi\u00f3n era m\u00e1s alta que la actual, ya que los huevos de cocodrilo solo sobreviven en un rango de temperaturas mayor que el actual\u201d, aclara Van der Made.<\/p>\n<p><strong>El evento geol\u00f3gico que dio paso al Plioceno<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La crisis del Messiniense es un evento geol\u00f3gico y paleoclim\u00e1tico, que dur\u00f3 unos 600.000 a\u00f1os. El actual estrecho de Gibraltar qued\u00f3 cerrado, se formaron los Andes y el mar Mediterr\u00e1neo qued\u00f3 reducido a una serie de lagunas de aguas salobres, ya que la evaporaci\u00f3n era mayor que las aportaciones de agua de las lluvias y r\u00edos que desembocaban en el Mediterr\u00e1neo.<\/p>\n<p>El nivel del agua baj\u00f3 facilitando el intercambio de fauna entre los continentes africano y europeo.
