Foto: Kai Remmers\/dpa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>El estudio, dirigido por un equipo de investigadores de la Queen&#8217;s University de Belfast, se\u00f1ala que aumentar la ingesta de alimentos y bebidas ricos en flavonoides podr\u00eda ayudar a reducir en un 28% el riesgo de desarrollar esta enfermedad incurable.<\/p>\n<p>En la actualidad, unos <strong>55 millones de personas en todo el mundo padecen alg\u00fan tipo de demencia<\/strong>, que es adem\u00e1s la s\u00e9ptima causa de muerte m\u00e1s frecuente, seg\u00fan cifras de la OMS.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque la edad y la gen\u00e9tica contribuyen sustancialmente al desarrollo de la enfermedad, los investigadores se\u00f1alaron que se ha demostrado que factores de riesgo como la dieta pueden desempe\u00f1ar un papel importante en la prevenci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan el estudio, los flavonoides, que se encuentran principalmente en los alimentos vegetales, tienen una serie de beneficios para la salud, como propiedades antioxidantes, antiinflamatorias y anticancer\u00edgenas. <strong>Tambi\u00e9n se han relacionado con un menor riesgo de enfermedades cr\u00f3nicas como las cardiovasculares<\/strong>, as\u00ed como con una mejora de la funci\u00f3n cognitiva.<\/p>\n<p>El estudio, publicado en JAMA Network Open y dirigido por el profesor Aedin Cassidy, del Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems y del Institute for Global Food Security de Queen&#8217;s, se\u00f1ala: \u00abLa prevalencia mundial de la demencia sigue aumentando r\u00e1pidamente.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00abEn este estudio de cohortes basado en la poblaci\u00f3n, analizamos los datos diet\u00e9ticos de m\u00e1s de 120.000 adultos de entre 40 y 70 a\u00f1os del Biobanco del Reino Unido.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00abNuestros resultados muestran que consumir seis raciones adicionales de alimentos ricos en flavonoides al d\u00eda, en particular bayas, t\u00e9 y vino tinto, se asoci\u00f3 con un riesgo un 28% menor de demencia.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00abLos hallazgos fueron m\u00e1s notables en individuos con un alto riesgo gen\u00e9tico, as\u00ed como en aquellos con s\u00edntomas de depresi\u00f3n\u00bb.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>La primera autora del estudio, la Dra.
