Bangkok (dpa<\/strong><\/a><\/span>) – Malaysia’s main tourism industry body is warning the country’s Muslims to keep an eye out for fraud if they plan on travelling to Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) said it was concerned about the \u00abescalating issue\u00bb of scams and urged the government to do more about it.<\/p>\n

\u00abThe current and glaring weakness over the past decades lie in what is viewed as inadequate level of enforcement especially on unlicensed operators,\u00bb said Nigel Wong, MATTA’s president.<\/p>\n

Around 60% of Malaysia’s 33-million population follow Islam, which requires adherents to make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca during their lives.<\/p>\n

To manage crowds, Saudi Arabia operates a quota system that allocates a certain number of slots each year for the main Hajj pilgrimage, which usually works out at 1 per 1,000 Muslims per country, with authorities in those countries in turn managing who gets to go.<\/p>\n

Scams have been reported in other countries, from Malaysia’s neighbour Indonesia, home to more Muslims than any other country, to Britain, where police issue warnings to would-be travellers to be vigilant about who they book with.<\/p>\n

The fraudsters have \u00abcaused financial losses and emotional distress to innocent pilgrims,\u00bb according to MATTA, which warned that Malaysia’s travel industry was being \u00abtarnished\u00bb by the scams, which have taken in people travelling for umrah, the pilgrimage to Mecca that can be done any time outside the main Hajj event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
